Sound Meter Pro (v2.5) manual

Hello. I'm android boy, the chief developer of Smart Tools co,.

Sound Meter Pro is the 4th set of the Smart Tools suite. It includes 2 tools (sound meter, vibrometer).

Ⅰ. Sound Meter
This tool is using your built-in microphone so as to measure sound pressure, and shows a reference. It can be called as SPL (sound pressure level) meter.

3 Red lines mean max, mean and min values.
④ Refresh : to reset, long-click on the center of meter or click this refresh icon

⑥ Black / White toggle : make your screen dim for saving battery

※ Examples of sound pressure

 20dB : Rustling leaves, Ticking watch
 30dB : Quiet whisper at 3 ft, Library
 40dB : Quiet residential area, Park
 50dB : Quiet office, Quiet street
 60dB : Normal conversation at 3 ft
 70dB : Busy traffic, phone ringtone
 80dB : Busy street, alarm clock
 90dB : Factory machinery at 3 ft
100dB : Subway train, Heavy snoring(2ft)
110dB : Rock music, Screaming child
120dB : Threshold of pain, Thunderclap
130dB : Jet engine at 100 ft
180dB : Space shuttle lift-off


※ Don't blame this app for Maximum Limitation
Most microphones are aligned to human voice (300-3400Hz, 40-60dB). It is enough for voice calls. But it occurs an issue of 16 bits microphone limitation.

See sound pressure at calibrate menu. It'll stop at 32767 (32767=2^15-1). In conclusion, 16 bits microphones cannot measure above 96 dB. (more link)

Because of additional optimization (background noise reduction), some devices can measure at most 80 dB. Galaxy S3-S5(81-84db), HTC Desire HD(85db), Galaxy Note(81/91db). Most of Motorola and Amazon devices can measure 96 dB fully.

Last year, a german user suggested a trick in order to bypass hardware limitation. Add +30dB at calibrate menu, and close your microphone hole with your finger, so that you can measure a sound over 100dB. Try it out. :)

※ Menu & Settings

① Upside down : Most smartphones have a microphone hole at the bottom. It is recommended to point the microphone to the sound source. How? Upside down!

※ Statistic Menu

① Save : enter title name for current chart
② Load : load the charts stored. To remove a chart, long-click and select [delete] option.

③ Export : export current data as CSV file into SD card. Move it into PC and open with MS-Excel. This function can store up to 24 hours. Here is an example.

※ How to calibrate Sound Meter ???

Since 2010, we had calibrated the app on 500+ android devices (major Galaxy, LG, Xperia, Motorola and Nexus). It's a pity that the results were changed easily depending on OS version.

In order to calibrate the app correctly, you must compare it with an ACTUAL sound level meter. Otherwise, ensure that the measured value of a very quiet room is 30-35dB. If the result were out of range, you could add/reduce number at the calibrate menu.

It is an auxiliary tool for reference. Just enjoy it.


※ Level Nofitication
A lot of users, especially school teachers, wanted to know if their voices were loud. Turn on [Level Notification] option at the settings.
60dB+ : green, 70dB+ : pink,  80dB+ : red. It is a pity that Sound alarm cannot be used due to amplification.

Ⅱ. Vibration Meter
This tool is using a 3-axis acceleration sensor so as to measure device's vibration, movement or the earthquake, and shows a reference. The value is releated to Modified Mercalli Intensity scale(MMI). It has no unit.

※ Examples of MMI earthquake scale
  I : Instrumental. Felt by animals
  II : Weak. Felt indoors by a few people
  III : Slight. Felt indoors by several people
  IV : Moderate. Hanging objects swing
  V : Rather Strong. Some dishes broken
  VI : Strong. Heavy furniture moved
  VII : Very Strong. Difficult to stand
  VIII : Destructive. Fall of walls
  IX : Violent. Noticeable cracks in ground
  X : Intense. Almost destroyed
  XI : Extreme. Rails bent greatly
  XII : Cataclysmic. Total destruction


※ How to calibrate Vibration meter ???

Most acceleration sensors are unstable and weakened easily, so that calibration is required.

① Go calibrate menu.

② Shake your device as possible as you can. Increase / decrease its sensitivity so that max value reaches about 10-11.
③ Check your unnecessary value measured by no movement.
④ Click [Cut Baseline] button and select an number.

⑤ Repeat ②-④ several times.


※ FAQ
Q. It says "Unable to open microphone.".
A. Other app occupied your microphone. Just restart your device.

Q. Where can I find the Screenshot and CSV file?
A.  /storage/emulated/0/smart-tools/, /storage/sdcard0/smart-tools/, /mnt/sdcard/smart-tools/.

Q. I hear nothing. But the app shows 30-40 dB.
A. A microphone cannot catch very low-frequency noise. 0 dB means the vacuum of space.

Q. Is the result dBA weighted?
A. Yes, I calibrated the app with a actual SPL meter with dBA. But db(A) makes no sense because the result is not perfect.

Q. How to disable tick sound switching from chart to text?
A. Turn off [Sound effect] option at the settings.

Q. What is the unit of vibration?
A. It has no unit, just the scale for reference.

Smart Distance (v1.5) manual

Hello users. I'm Android Boy.

Smart Distance is a range-finder using camera perspective.  There are 20,000+ Android devices in the world, with different camera lenses and performance. So it is not easy to measure the target's distance with camera view. I calibrated the app on 700+ major devices for 3 years.

※ How to use

  1) To measure the distance from a target, enter its height (width).
  2) Adjust the target to green lines by touching screen.
     By the way, do you know target's approximate height (width)?


※ Target's height or width???

For accurate measurement, it is important to know the height (width) of a target exactly.

Don't worry. We can guess the height (width) of objects around us.

- Height

  man : 1.7m (5.6ft), golf flag : 2.1m (7ft), door : 2.0m (6.5-7.0ft)

- Width
  car : ~4.5m (Mini : 3.8m, sedan : 4.5m, SUV : 5.0m), bus : 10m (33ft)

We also can find target's specifications. For example, The Statue of Liberty = 93m (305ft), The Boeing 777 = 74m (243ft)

※ Golf-rangefinder ???
This app can be a good tool for golf players because you know the height of golf flags.

※ How to calibrate it
Is the distance inaccurate? You can calibrate it with [Height(Width) Calibration] at the settings. When height calibration is 36, it means that your camera view has 36 degrees range vertically.

The app shows data storage and data flow in data section so as to save a tab. It is not a mistake. Similarly, it shows speed and running face units in speed section, too. By the way, do you know the difference of "kb", "kB", "kib", "kiB", "kbps"?

 M : mega (1000 x 1000)
 Mi : mebi  (1024 x 1024)

It supports landscape mode for tablet PCs. Select more menu (3 dots) at the top-right corner.

※ FAQ
Q. How to copy the number to clipboard?
A. Double-tap on the number (since v2.4.2)

Q. How can I convert from gram to litre?
A. "gram" is weight unit, "litre" is volume unit. They cannot be converted. 1L of water = 1kg, 1L of gasoline = ~0.70kg

Q. Where is "A(amp)" unit?
A. Click the favorite icon (star) in Science category. Select [Current] checkbox.

Q. "kg" is not weight unit, but mass unit.
A. I know. weight = mass x Gravity. "mass" and "weight" are same in earth.
Above all, "weight" is a friendly word and the public do not understand "mass" perfectly.

 2) Touch your screen following the target.

※ What is the shortest distance?

"The Shortest Distance" is a minimum distance between you and a road. You must measure it before using the app. An actual ruler and Google Maps can be a good solution. Otherwise, how about using my rangefinder apps?

If the measured speed is faster or slower than actual speed, you can calibrate it with [Speed Calibration] at the settings. 25-400% is a selectable range.

In other words, when the app shows 50km/h even if actual speed is 75km/h, set the calibrateion to 150%.

Google Play store already had a lot of Unit Converting apps. But most are inconvenient and difficult to use because of poor and complicated UI(user interface). I've been improving my app for 5 years, so that it became intuitive and simple.

This app would not have all units in the world. It shows only common units selected by users' feedback. The different unit sets will appear depending on your country and language.

My app shows different unit sets depending on your country. It can guess your country according to your telecom carrier and system language.

When you travel abroad, other unit sets can appear because of overseas roaming. In this case, select the country in [Country selection] option at the settings.


※ What is the ad-free menu ?
Please watch a reward video for 15-30 seconds, so that all ads will be removed for 60 minutes. And an information box will appear like paid version. I think it will be worth it.

Select "ft in" unit. For various inputs, you can use fractions. "lb oz" are the same.

ex1) 2' 3.5" =>  [2] + [ ' "/ ] + [3] + [ ' "/ ] + [5]
ex2) 1' 2 5/8" => [1] + [ ' "/ ] + [2] + [ ' "/ ] + [5] + + [ ' "/ ] + [8]


※ How to input "deg min sec"
Select "deg min sec" or "deg" unit in angle section. You can input "deg min sec" with [.˚ '] button on the keypad.

ex1) 1˚ 23' 45.67" =>  [1] + [.˚'] + [2][3] + [.˚'] + [4][5] + [.˚'] + [6][7]
ex2) 0˚ 1' 2" =>  [.˚'] + [1] + [.˚'] + [2]

※ Data storage / flow ?
The app shows data storage and data flow in data section so as to save a tab. It is not a mistake. Similarly, it shows speed and running face units in speed section, too. By the way, do you know the difference of "kb", "kB", "kib", "kiB", "kbps"?
 b : bit
 B : byte
 k : kilo (1000)
 Ki : kibi (1024)
 M : mega (1000 x 1000)
 Mi : mebi  (1024 x 1024)
 kbps : kilo bit per second

Q. How to copy the result to clipboard?
A. Double-tap on it.

Q. How can I convert from gram to litre?
A. "gram" is weight unit, "litre" is volume unit. They cannot be converted. 1L of water = 1kg, 1L of gasoline = ~0.70kg

Q. Where is "A (amp)" unit?
A. Click the favorite icon (star) in Science category. Select [Current] checkbox.

Q. "kg" is not weight unit, but mass unit.
A. I know. weight = mass x Gravity. "mass" and "weight" are same in earth.
Above all, "weight" is a friendly word and the public do not understand "mass" perfectly.

Q. I need more units such as kHz, MHz, GHz ...
A. How about using "prefix" section?
